Many businesses already have a listing, created either by Google or by a previous owner. Claiming it (getting verified) is the first step to editing your hours, replying to reviews, and tracking calls.

01

Typical scenarios

  • Unowned listing — it shows "Own this business?"
  • A previous owner (employee, partner, agency) still has access.
  • Two listings for the same location (duplicate).
  • Wrong address or category added by users.
02

Steps to claim it

The exact flow varies a bit in the app, but the logic is the same.

  1. 01

    1. Search for the business on Google

Maps or Search → your business name. Open the correct profile.

  2. 02

    2. Tap "Claim this business" / "Own this business?"

Sign in with an email you'll control long term (not the personal account of an employee who might leave).

  3. 03

    3. Choose a verification method

Postcard, phone, email, video, or instant verification, depending on eligibility.

  4. 04

    4. Enter the code

Don't let the postcard deadline expire. Save the confirmation email.

  5. 05

    5. If someone else owns it

Ask them to add you as an owner, or start a dispute through the Google Business Help Center with proof.

  6. 06

    6. Merge duplicates

Mark the wrong listing as a duplicate or contact support; don't create a third one.

Use a company email, not a temporary one.

Mistakes that make it harder

  1. Verifying with a technician's personal Gmail and then losing access.
  2. Creating a new profile instead of claiming the existing one.
  3. Ignoring the dispute and fighting it out in public reviews.

“Without verification, you don't control the conversation: not your reviews, your hours, or your messages.”

Key takeaways

  • Claim it before creating another profile.
  • A stable email + documents ready to go.
  • Duplicates: merge them, don't multiply them.
