Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the listing that shows up on Maps and in local search. If it's incomplete or outdated, you're losing calls. Here's the exact order: what you need, where to log in, and what to change.

01

What you need before you start

  • A Google (Gmail) account with owner or manager access.
  • Your legal business name, address, phone number, and website (if you have one).
  • Your real business hours (including Saturdays and holidays).
  • At least 5–10 clear photos: storefront, team, finished jobs, interior.
  • 10–15 uninterrupted minutes the first time.
02

Steps to follow (in this order)

Don't try to fix everything in one day. Work through these steps in order: first what Google uses to show you, then what builds trust and drives calls.

  1. 01

    1. Primary category (be exact)

Where: Profile → Info → Category. Pick the most specific one ("Roofing contractor," "Landscaper," "Plumber"), not "Company" or "Local business." Add 2–3 secondary categories only if you truly offer those services.

  2. 02

    2. Name, address, and phone

Where: Info → Contact and location. Make them match your website and the way customers search for you. A wrong phone number or a misplaced map pin means fewer calls.

  3. 03

    3. Hours (and holidays)

Where: Info → Hours. List your real hours. If you're closed on a given day, mark it. Inaccurate hours lead to bad reviews and frustrated customers at a locked door.

  4. 04

    4. A short, clear description

Where: Info → Description. In the first few lines: what you do + where + what sets you apart (e.g., "Residential roofing in Stamford and Fairfield County. Bilingual service in English and Spanish."). No keyword stuffing and go easy on the emojis.

  5. 05

    5. Photos (every month, not just once)

Where: Profile → Photos → Add. Upload your storefront, team, before/after shots, and branded vehicles. A practical goal: several new photos a month. Profiles with lots of real photos get more clicks.

  6. 06

    6. Services (or products)

Where: Info → Services. List what you sell (repair, replacement, lawn care, etc.). If you can, add a ballpark price or "starting at…" so customers know you're a fit before they call.

  7. 07

    7. Reviews: ask and respond

Where: Reviews (on your profile or in the app). Reply to every review within 48 hours. Ask for a review right after a great job (via WhatsApp or text with your link). You don't need hundreds — you need more (and more recent) reviews than the top 3 competitors on the map.

  8. 08

    8. One post a week

Where: Profile → Posts → Create. A photo of a job, a short offer, or a useful tip. It's free. A profile that posts regularly looks "alive" to both Google and customers.

If you only have 30 minutes

  1. Fix your category, hours, and phone number.
  2. Upload 5 good photos (storefront + 4 jobs).
  3. Reply to any reviews you haven't answered.
  4. Ask 3 recent customers for a review via WhatsApp.

“Perfect is the enemy of published. Get the basics right first; the rest can follow.”
